What is a Chemical Resistant Barrier Isolator and what are the benefits

The Standard Group of Companies is a leading supplier of equipment into the pharmaceutical and chemical industry.

Part of the Standard Group portfolio includes barrier isolators which are manufactured by the Schematic Engineering Industries division.

Schematic Engineering have extensive knowledge and expertise in designing bespoke isolator systems to suit a variety of applications ensuring demanding  isolator process requirements are achieved. Such requirements include providing equipment with high chemical resistance.

Barrier Isolators are used for many reasons including protecting the employee and environment when processing toxic and hazardous chemicals and substances.

The lifespan of these barrier isolators can be greatly reduced as these toxic chemicals corrode the internal and external surfaces of the barrier isolator over time. To overcome this, Schematic Engineering supply barrier isolators with chemcial resistance surfaces.

What is Chemical Resistance?

Chemical resistance is the strength of a material to protect against a chemical invasion or a severe solvent reaction.

Chemical resistance is also described as the limit a material can withstand its resistance to chemicals which are normally toxic and extremely hazardous.

A material with low chemical resistance will soften over time which will result in the material losing its serviceability.

When testing a material for chemical resistance, important factors include:

  • Temperature
  • Concentration of chemicals
  • Exposure duration

All of the above properties are a common feature in many industrial applications.

This is why it is very important to consider all factors when installing a barrier isolator in any process which includes pharmaceutical, chemical, nuclear, agrochemical and biological.

The Schematic Engineering division use special coatings inside and outside the isolator which will extend the life expectancy exponentially, hence reducing cost and increasing safety.

The coating that is added to these isolators is an exotic material called Hastelloy which has excellent chemical resistant properties and is very durable.

Other key features include: -

  • Excellent resistance to stress
  • Corrosion resistant
  • Stress corrosion cracking resistance
  • Resistance to acids and some alkalis
  • Ease of welding
  • Temperature resistant.

An alternative to Hastelloy includes various synthetic fluoropolymers which do have a high chemical resistance factor, however are prone to scratches and indentations when using the isolator.

These lacerations over time will reduce the lifespan of the isolator as it will become difficult to clean and the toxic chemicals will have an avenue to corrode the shell of the isolator.

Examples of Schematic Chemical Resistant Isolators: -

  • ANFD isolator
  • Reactor isolator
  • Blending and filtering isolators
  • Sampling isolators

Other Isolators are available considering customer specific URS requirements.

The Standard Group of Companies also design and manufacture Chemical Resistant Gloveboxes where the box protects the operator from fume exposure.

Key advantages of using a Chemical Resistant Barrier Isolator include: -

  • Increased life span
  • Easier to clean
  • Reduced contamination
  • Operator improved safety
  • Cost reduction
  • Increased productivity
